New International School of Japan

We are multiage and dual language by design, and we are free from the rigidity and standardization of the age-grade system. Our students are remarkably engaged as we provide a multitude of resources and a positive ethos that is hard to duplicate in traditional school settings. *Mastery* motivation is usual, as we do not make children feel good or bad by virtue of their comparison with others, instead respecting their readiness and timing for learning. The style largely breaks the so-called *cycle of predictability" as the children experience being younger or older, more proficient or less proficient, over time, in their classes. They develop social, communication, and presentation skills as well as academic skills as an inherent part of their school experience. Whereas one of the classroom teachers may communicate and *teach* in English and the other in Japanese, the children are welcome and encouraged to use and develop all of their language proficiencies. We view them all as emerging bilinguals or multilinguals. This is a *translanguaging* context-based approach as opposed to a fundamentally monolingual rule-oriented approach to language acquisition and use. Parents are advised to check the mission on our website, as it does describe what we do, and to attend an orientation and tour as part of the application process.

Tamagawa Academy (K12) and University

Tamagawa Academy (K-12) was founded in 1929 as an elementary education organization. Later a secondary education division was added, and in 1947 Tamagawa University received approval for establishment as an "old system" (pre-war) university. As an academy (gakuen) which encompasses all school grades, Tamagawa currently provides education from kindergarten to graduate school level within a single campus.
With the school's primary educational principle of "Zenjin" Education, and as a private school with definite individuality, Tamagawa aims to build rich and harmonious human culture beginning with scholarship, morality, arts, religion, the body and everyday life. It is through education that we become better people. Education is an activity that improves a person - starting at the time of birth and continuing on throughout life. Tamagawa founder Kuniyoshi Obara characterized human beings as having an unique individuality from birth, and also a commonality with everyone in the world. The mission of Tamagawa education is to progress towards a realization of this principle and to produce outstanding individuals who can contribute not only to Japanese society but to the world.
Tamagawa provides a globally renowned, world-class education, seeking
to produce graduates capable of applying knowledge to the benefit of the
society. Tamagawa is a IB World School.
