While many schools were coping with this pandemic-driven imperative, GIIS students thrived with interactive lessons through video conferencing tools. All students are accustomed to using digital tablets or laptops in the classroom as a learning tool. Primary and Secondary students and teachers use GSuite (with Google Classroom IDs) for collaborative work, sharing assignments, projects and more. Kindergarten
GIIS provides two pathways for preschool students aged 3-6 years – the IB Early Years and Global Montessori Plus (GMP), a customised preschool programme.
The IB Early Years offered as part of IB PYP fosters intellectual, creative and curious learners. Students are provided developmentally appropriate learning spaces, encouraging exploration and discovery. They engage in artistic, musical and dramatic activities, which promote symbolic expression and creative exploration through dedicated spaces like an Atelier.
GMP combines the Montessori method with best practices from modern preschool education. There are five foundational pillars of the programme, which focus on developing language fluency, numeracy skills, experiential learning, technology, relevant for young learners and interactive games to build their cognitive skills.
Primary School
GIIS offers two pathways for primary school children: the internationally recognised IB Primary Years Programme and Indian Central Board Curriculum for young learners aged 6 to 11 years.
The PYP is an inquiry-driven programme that fosters curiosity and independent thinking in students. The IB-certified teachers that we have are highly competent, passionate and creative in the way they facilitate the PYP. Students at GIIS have multiple second-language options to choose from, and we have a music, dance and visual arts curriculum embedded in our PYP.
CBSE for primary school students adopts a holistic approach to education allowing our young learners to focus on academics while simultaneously pursuing extracurricular interests, such as sports, music, arts, leadership skills and community involvement.
Secondary School
While the Indian Central Board Curriculum is offered for students from Grade 1 to 12, for the international curriculum option, we offer students the Cambridge Lower Secondary Programme for Grades 6 to 8 (ages 11 to 14), providing them with a clear pathway as they move on to the Cambridge IGCSE in Grades 9 and 10 (ages 14 to 16). Both programmes encourage students to use their higher-order thinking skills, communication and collaboration skills that are mandatory for the 21st century.
For Grades 11 and 12, the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) at GIIS is popular for its high academic standards. The programme is being offered in Singapore for over 15 years and our students have consistently performed well in their IBDP with over 110+ IBDP World Toppers (45/45) and Near-Perfect Scorers (44/45) to date.
Student life and Extracurricular/Co-curricular activities
Extracurricular activities are often sports-based (cricket, football, basketball, tennis, table tennis etc) and enables students to develop their physical skills, aptitude, leadership and social skills. Students who show particular talent in these extracurricular activities may participate in a Gold Squad programme, which provides additional, intensive training under skilled coaches.
Co-curricular activities (CCAs) take what students are learning in the classroom and build upon that through clubs, performances, competitions, talent shows and additional classroom work. Multiple CCAs are offered each year, including music, dance, cooking without fire, debate, ceramics, radio jockeying and more.
English Language Support Programme
GIIS has an English Language Support Programme (ELSP) for students with little or no previous experience in English. This programme provides the most basic tools for beginning the process of communication in English in an interactive environment with lots of individual attention. An initial assessment is conducted for students to assess their English level, as they enter the programme.
The purpose of this programme is to help students who have limited English knowledge to understand, speak, read and write English. Students learn to exchange personal information, communicate basic needs and start with elementary conversation that occurs in the classroom and social settings. A structured study of grammar is also integrated into the programme. Students have between 1-3 classes of English language support classes per week depending on their needs.
