We plan to use the TOEFL Junior Test as an external assessment of our students’ English proficiency. The test measures skills in Listening Comprehension, Language Form and Meaning, and Reading Comprehension, and the results can be compared with CEFR levels. We generally plan to use this assessment for students from Grade 4 to Grade 6.

As our students are mainly in Grade 1 and Grade 2, we have not yet conducted these external assessments.

As our school currently provides elementary-level education, this question is not directly applicable in the same way as it would be for a secondary school or high school. Some students continue on to our secondary-level programs, while others move on to a variety of junior high schools, high schools, and international schools, depending on their individual goals and family plans.

For reference, recent graduates from the YES group have continued their academic journeys at schools such as Hiroo Gakuen Koishikawa Junior High School AG Course, Morimura Gakuen, International College of Technology, Kokusai Koutou Senmon Gakkou, Oozora High School, N High School, Orange County School of the Arts in California, Clayburn Middle School in Canada, Senzoku Gakuen Junior High School, and King George Secondary School in Vancouver, Canada.

We do not have full-time specialized staff exclusively for special learning needs. However, some of our staff members have studied how to support children with individual learning characteristics, and some have teaching experience at support facilities.
We provide individual consideration and support according to each student’s needs. At the same time, we focus on helping students develop social skills so that they can learn, communicate, and participate in school life with confidence.

We provide support for these students by respecting each child’s individuality and learning characteristics, while also helping them develop social skills. We believe it is important for students to understand themselves and feel accepted, but also to acquire the skills they need to communicate, cooperate, and participate confidently in society.

For gifted, able, and talented students, we communicate closely among staff members so that each student’s strengths, interests, and current condition are shared and understood by the whole team. When appropriate, we provide additional or individualized learning opportunities. At the same time, we believe that interaction with peers of the same age is also very important for developing social skills. Therefore, we carefully seek a good balance between academic challenge, individual growth, and social development in our daily practice.

Yes, students can access support from educational specialists when needed. We are able to cooperate with local support organizations, and both YES Yokohama and YES Odawara have many experienced teachers who can provide guidance and support.

Before admission, we usually have an interview with the family and offer a trial visit or trial lesson for the child. Through this process, we check the child’s English level, learning background, personality, and readiness to participate in school life.

Students are not required to wear a uniform. They wear their own clothes. We have an official school T-shirt, but students are only asked to wear it for school events.

We offer extracurricular and special activities such as field trips, rice field experiences, and overnight camps.

Physical education classes are included in the curriculum twice a week. In addition, we invite a musical theater instructor twice a week. We also have a professional marimba player who teaches music, as well as instructors for calligraphy and art.

We do not currently have sports teams or regular sports competitions for students to participate in.

Facilities available to students include a reading/library space, lunch room, auditorium, school kitchen, music room, and other learning spaces.

We do not have our own sports facilities on campus. For physical education classes, we use local gymnasiums or travel to larger sports fields and outdoor facilities.

YES Odawara is a small, warm, English-based international school where children learn through communication, experience, and close relationships with their teachers. We value each child’s individuality while helping them develop academic skills, social skills, confidence, and independence.

Our teaching approach is based on small class sizes, an English-speaking environment, inquiry-based learning, respect for each child’s individuality, and the development of social skills. We place great importance on hands-on learning experiences and close relationships between teachers and students. Through our curriculum and activities, we encourage students to learn about their local community, understand Japan, and broaden their awareness of the world.

At YES Odawara, our staff includes two full-time international staff members, two bilingual staff members, and three Japanese staff members. In addition, except on Wednesdays, full-time staff members from YES Yokohama stay at the Odawara campus throughout the school day and teach classes.
