| Qualities and characteristics best defining the school |
The French International School of Guangzhou (Lycée Français International de Canton - LFIC) has been teaching the French curriculum in Guangzhou for nearly thirty years. It is a non-profit school, founded and governed by parents, and is the only school in South China to offer a complete French-language education, from nursery (age 2.5) to the French Baccalauréat. |
| Teaching approach of the school |
Kindergarten (ages 2.5 to 6). Children are welcomed from the age of half past two. The French maternelle is a full school cycle, not a nursery: through play, language, movement and artistic activity, children learn to speak, to live together and to become independent. Chinese and English are part of daily life from the very first year. Primary school (ages 6 to 11). Reading, writing, mathematics and scientific enquiry form the core of the programme, taught by a single class teacher with specialist teachers for languages, sport and the arts. Small classes allow teaching to be differentiated so that each child progresses at their own pace. Secondary school (ages 11 to 18). Lower secondary (collège) broadens the range of subjects and leads to the Diplôme National du Brevet, for which the school is an official examination centre. Upper secondary (lycée) prepares students for the Baccalauréat, with specialist subjects chosen according to each student's plans for higher education. Throughout secondary school, students are given real responsibility: an elected student life council manages its own projects and budget, and the school newspaper is run by a student editorial team. |
