We follow the English National Curriculum and IB Diploma Programme – widely recognised and globally respected – taught by our highly experienced and dedicated teachers who really show their lifelong love of learning.
For our IB Diploma examinations, two out of three have scored high enough to qualify for the world’s top 100 universities. For two consecutive years, two of our students have achieved a perfect score of 45 while 2 others have achieved a nearly perfect score of 44.

Use of technology in the classroom

Classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards, projectors and banks of computers to make learning come alive, along with Apple TVs connected in every classroom.
Information Computer Technology, or ICT as BSB calls it, is a core subject starting from Year One and the school's designated computer labs in Secondary school and portable laptop trolley for classrooms in Primary school enable each student to explore different technology platforms, using the latest hardware and software.
BSB is continually looking to challenge its students, using new hardware like its 3D printer. The LEGO Robotics lab provides an opportunity for students to explore the amazing world of robotics and compete in LEGO robotics competition.

The BSB Student Support Team works together with the class teacher, teaching assistants and external specialists if necessary. The team’s aim is to provide additional support, where required, to assist all students at BSB to meet their individual potential. The Team has strong links with class teachers, parents and students which are critical for the educational and emotional success of the students in the school's care.

Besides the above sports facilities, we have 4 outdoor purpose-built playgrounds (separated by age group), an amphitheater, a theatre, dance studio, drama studio, dedicated music rooms, computer music suites, recording studio, ICT suites, science laboratories, dark room, art studios, SEN room, Sixth Form study lounge, and a robotics lab.

Sports facilities at the school

The sports facilities cater for a wide range of indoor and outdoor sports. Students make use of a multi-use sports hall, cardio fitness and weights rooms, indoor heated swimming pool, Early Years swimming pool, indoor basketball courts, outdoor running track and full size football pitch. The Sports Dome features a powerful air handling and filtration system and is fully temperature controlled to create a safe and spacious play space for students all year round.

Early Years | Ages 2-5
Our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum is led by our very experienced and caring teachers. They ensure our young learners are happy from the start of their first school experience in our fantastic nursery at the British School of Beijing, Shunyi. With personalised attention to each child, your child will grow and thrive, as we work from their individual starting points: they develop their skills and personalities, build their confidence, and form lasting bonds with peers and teachers.
EYFS sets standards for the learning, development and care of children up to age five. It prepares them for Primary School, developing their knowledge and skills.
Primary | Ages 5-11
Our talented team of experienced Primary School teachers have a highly ambitious approach to all-around excellence, committed to nurturing and inspiring each child.
National Curriculum for England
Our English Primary Programme is organised, stimulating, and challenging for all children. It is broken into Key Stage One (Years 1–2) and Key Stage Two (Years 3–6), which includes all major subjects of learning, while introducing our new subjects and concepts.
German Primary School
Our German Primary Programme offers the opportunity for our German-speaking Primary School students (from Klasse 1 to Klasse 4) to study core subjects in German, following the German Curriculum, while also integrating the English Curriculum with non-core subjects and whole-school activities.
Lower Secondary | Ages 11-14
Following the English National Curriculum, Key Stage 3 spans Years 7–9 and covers the transition from Primary to Secondary School. Our students have greater academic responsibility as they study a diverse range of subjects and have increased amounts of homework, organised into a timetable. In these exciting years, our students discover the areas of learning they are most passionate about.
Our students in KS3 study a range of different subjects at BSB Shunyi, so that they become comfortable with a variety of subjects. This helps them eventually to choose which subjects they are most excited to study as separate courses in Key Stage 4.
Developing in two languages is also important during these years at BSB Shunyi: our students can study Mandarin, German or Korean as a first language, and also French, Spanish or Mandarin as a second language.
Upper Secondary | Ages 14-18
IGCSE | Ages 14-16
The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) gives students the opportunity to shape their learning according to their interests and aspirations. The IGCSE offers a good foundation for future participation in a global society, and BSB Shunyi offers pathways to connect disciplines and to foster creative thinking and personal growth.
IB Diploma | Ages 14-16
This two-year globally recognised course encourages the development of students’ wellbeing and rationality, and prepares them to participate in a global society.
The IB Diploma qualification is widely recognised by the world’s top universities and grounded in the philosophy that students should apply critical thinking skills to the world around them.
