ISF is a bilingual school and we strive to equip our students with the language skills required to engage with the curriculum in both Chinese and English. In the Pre-School and Primary School, students are taught in mixed ability classes with Chinese as the dominant language of instruction. Teachers are expected to differentiate to meet the needs of our students. From Grade 2 onwards students seeking to enrol at ISF will need to have age-appropriate levels of fluency in both Chinese and English to perform well in the curriculum. In the Secondary School, students are placed into either a Language A or Language B program in accordance with their ability level.

Learning support offered

The ISF Academy employs a team of multi-disciplinary professionals to provide comprehensive learning support services for students from Foundation Year to Grade 12.
The Learning Support Team (LST) promotes learning diversity and believes that all students can be successful when provided with the appropriate support for their individual needs. In both Primary and Secondary Schools, there are learning support and enrichment specialists who offer differentiated instructional programs for students with diverse learning styles and strengths. LST consists of Clinical and Educational Psychologists, Guidance Counselors, a Social Worker, a Student Guidance Officer, and School Nurses. They work together with teachers and parents to enhance students’ physical, social, emotional and academic development through a wide range of counseling and learning support initiatives. Walk-in chat room sessions are available to any student who may wish to share his/her feelings, thoughts, or concerns with a counselor in a safe place. LST also offers a variety of social groups, learning strategies workshops for parents and students, and after-school programs that foster life skills and boosts self-esteem.

The LST initiates a Gifted and Talented Identification process from Grade 4, based on prior attainment, parent nomination, teacher nomination and the Cognitive Abilities Test: Fourth Edition (CAT4) issued by the GL Assessment Group. 6.2. Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CTY) programs are also made available for Grade 2 - 12 students and families.

Entry evaluation for students

To be eligible for consideration of enrollment, every applicant must pass the admission assessments, complete the entire admissions process and fulfill all the admissions requirements. There are no language requirements for the Foundation Year, while appropriate grade-level proficiency in both Chinese and English must be met by Grade 1 to 11 prospective students.

Brief description of entry evaluation required

FOUNDATION YEAR
All applicants will be invited to participate in Student Group Activities, conducted in either English, Putonghua, or Cantonese as requested by the applicant (about 45 minutes). Shortlisted applicants will join various bilingual activities led by a teacher speaking English, Putonghua, or Cantonese as requested by the applicant (about 1 hour). Finally, there will be a meeting among the parent, child and a senior member of the school.

GRADE 1
All applicants will be invited to participate in Student Group Activities conducted in both English and Putonghua (about 1 hour). Shortlisted applicants will be led through the various bilingual activities by a teacher speaking English, Putonghua, or Cantonese as requested by the applicant (about 1 hour). Finally, there will be a meeting among the parent, child and a senior member of the school.

GRADE 2 TO GRADE 11
All applicants will be invited to do written papers in Chinese, English, Chinese Mathematics*, and English Mathematics. Shortlisted applicants will have oral interview in Putonghua and English, as well as a Student Group Interview. Finally, there will be a parent meeting with a senior member of the school.
