Use of technology in the classroom

NIS is constantly investigating new technology to use in teaching and learning. The school has two computer laboratories with internet and multi-media facilities. For the new academic year, NIS is excited to have invested in 80 Chromebooks for classroom use. NIS is also embracing online learning via ‘Google for Education.’

Do teachers assign homework to their students?

NIS recognizes that student learning extends beyond the school day whether informally or formally via the completion of homework. However, in line with current educational research, homework is not view universally as a vital component in the learning process. Homework is assigned to remediate when necessary, strength students’ understanding of content and to provide an avenue for additional practice and expose to course concepts.

Approximate hours of homework given

The amount of homework assigned varies per phase level and subject level. However, all homework assignments are posted on the parent portal so that parents are aware of these requirements.

Dedicated staff/programs for students with special learning needs

Learning support.

Learning support offered

The SEN department responds to students’ individual needs in the following ways:

- Tier 1 is for students who experience a general learning difficulty. The SEN department provides targeted resources and support to the class/homeroom teacher.
- Tier 2 offers extra support in the form of student observation and assessment by the SEN Department. Recommendations may be made to the parents to have the child externally assessed by a KHDA-approved provider. Students identified as Tier 2 may receive in-class support from an SEN teacher.
- Tier 3 is for students who have difficulty coping in a regular mainstream class setting and require one-on-one support from a shadow teacher.

The school supports gifted, able and talented students

NIS has an exciting student support program in development for gifted students. Such students are identified based upon external assessments and are invited to join a Problem Based Learning (PBL) program. These students range in grade level from 6-12 and work collaboratively to complete the program.

Students in grade 5 or lower who are identified as gifted or talented are supported with extension activities appropriate to their phase level.

Entry evaluation for students

Assessment.

Brief description of entry evaluation required

KG students must undergo an informal individual or group assessment to identify the child’s academic ability and English language competency. During the assessment, parents may view the facilities, meet teachers, and ask questions.

For elementary, middle and high schools, NIS uses the Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) online exam. MAP is a computerized test which helps teachers, parents and administrators improve learning for all students and make informed decisions to promote a child’s academic growth. For students who test below acceptable levels, parents must sign a letter to ensure additional support for the weak subjects.
