Use of technology in the classroom

At our school, technology is a tool for doing math and science, not just watching it. We blend hands-on and digital work so students experience a concept physically, then use technology to model and analyze it.

A few examples of how this looks:
- Interactive simulations and probability games. In data management and statistics, students run classic problems like the Monty Hall problem (switch or stay?) and dice-rolling experiments. Some simulations we run live in the classroom; others we run online to generate large data sets quickly, so students can compare theoretical and experimental probability.
- Bridging the physical and the digital. For projectile motion (Algebra II and AP Physics I), students take a shot on our own basketball court, then use technology to trace the parabolic arc of the ball—and from there they calculate the parabola’s equation by hand. Technology captures and models the motion; the mathematical reasoning stays with the student.
- Video and multimedia to introduce, reinforce, and review concepts.
- AI as a thinking partner, not an answer key. Students may use AI for brainstorming and idea development, but we always require them to verify any facts against credible sources. Confirming AI-generated information against reliable references is a core part of how we teach digital literacy.

Students use technology to explore and model, but the thinking, calculating, and verifying remain their own.

Is the school ready to use virtual classrooms when needed? (e.g. teaching lessons online during emergencies)

Yes

Do students practice religion at the school? What religion?

We are not a faith-based school and we do not practice or promote any specific religion.

How does the school accommodate non-religious students or students of a different religion?

We have students from a range of religious backgrounds, and we make provisions to respect and accommodate their beliefs. For example, our meal plan excludes pork for religious reasons and includes halal dishes, and we provide spaces where students are able to pray. Our aim is to create an inclusive environment where students of all faiths feel welcome and supported.

Learning support offered

We offer after school tutoring as part of regular scholastic program.

The school supports gifted, able and talented students

We challenge high-achieving students by giving them access to advanced coursework and deeper, more demanding material. This includes Advanced Placement (AP) courses, as well as enriched content that goes beyond the standard curriculum so students study topics in greater depth, complete extension work, and present their learning to the class. This approach stretches their thinking, builds independence, and develops the research and communication skills they’ll need at the post-secondary level.

Admissions

Entry evaluation for students

Yes. Our admissions process is designed to understand each applicant as a whole. Prospective students submit a complete application package, which includes a student letter, two references (one academic and one non-academic), and transcripts. We also conduct interviews as part of the process. International students complete a language assessment to determine appropriate placement in our program (ESL or academic English). Together, these elements help us ensure each student is well-matched and set up to succeed.

Boarding facilities at the school

Our boarders live in apartment-style accommodation within a house divided into separate apartments, offering a comfortable, homelike environment with laundry facilities and Wi-Fi throughout. A daily chaperone provides on-site supervision and support, ensuring students are safe and well cared for. Boarders receive daily meals through our meal plan—including halal options and a pork-free menu to accommodate religious needs—and also learn valuable life skills such as how to prepare their own meals. Academic support is provided through a dedicated study club, and students have access to our school and athletic facilities. Beyond daily life, boarders enjoy a range of enrichment experiences and outings, including tickets to the CNE (Canadian National Exhibition) in late August, movies, theatre performances, and professional sporting events such as NBA and NHL games. Our goal is to provide a secure, supportive, family-style setting where students can grow academically, socially, and personally, and truly feel at home.

About the school

Qualities and characteristics best defining the school

Uchenna Academy is a comprehensive private school in Toronto serving students in grades 7–12, defined by academic rigour, a hands-on approach to learning, and a close, inclusive community. Our small size allows us to know every student and tailor learning to their needs. We believe students learn best by doing, so rather than simply studying concepts, they explore, apply, and present their work. We offer challenging coursework, including Advanced Placement and enriched programming, and make thoughtful use of technology to deepen understanding. We welcome students of all backgrounds and faiths and support the whole student academically and personally. Guided by our motto, Vestri Optimus (“Your Best”), we are committed to helping every student reach their full potential and prepare for success at the post-secondary level and beyond.

Teaching approach of the school

Our teaching approach is hands-on, inquiry-based, and student-centred. We believe students learn best by doing—so rather than simply absorbing information, they explore concepts, apply them, and present their learning to others. Lessons are built around clear learning goals, an engaging opening activity, and frequent checks for understanding, so no student is left behind. We blend physical, real-world experiences with technology: students might model a concept through a simulation or experiment, then use digital tools to analyze it and work through the mathematics by hand. Small class sizes allow our teachers to know each student well and tailor instruction to their individual needs, strengths, and pace. We also emphasize critical thinking and digital literacy, so students learn to question information, verify facts against credible sources, and think for themselves. Our goal is to develop independent, confident learners who are well prepared for post-secondary studies and beyond.
