Yokohama International School

Yokohama International School is a warm and caring international community where families from all backgrounds feel welcome and students have abundant opportunities to explore, develop and challenge themselves. A medium-sized IB Continuum School, it offers all three main programs of the International Baccalaureate, providing an inquiry-centered, transdisciplinary and skills-focused learning continuum from early years through high school. Together, students, staff and parents strive to fulfill our simple yet dynamic mission: Live Learn Lead.
We will be starting classes at our new purpose-built campus in the Honmoku neighborhood of Yokohama, less than 2km away from our current Yamate-cho campus, from January 2022. The new YIS campus will be built on a 14,685m2 greenfield site adjacent to a shopping complex and close to other commercial and residential areas of the Honmoku neighborhood. The new site is about 50% larger than our current campus and will accommodate a full-size athletic field in addition to the classroom buildings. Current plans under development call for the construction of two buildings: a 4-story structure housing the library, cafeteria, performing arts center and most of the classroom areas and administrative offices, and a 3-story structure housing the Early Learning Center and PE facilities, including a double gymnasium and indoor swimming pool. Total floor area for the two buildings will be about 50% larger than the nine buildings that comprise our current campus. We are thrilled to be working with Kengo Kuma & Associates (KKAA) as lead architect for the project.
Chief among the campus design features was the desire to make every space a learning space and to retain and enhance the warm sense of community that people have when walking into our school now. Following on from this direction will be the creation of multiple open hub spaces that allow learning to flow flexibly in and out of classrooms as well as larger common spaces - both inside and outside - for community interaction.
