Dedicated staff/programs for students with special learning needs

Yes, we have a SEN (special educational needs) department and an ASP (additional support programme)
These help to support children with more complex educational needs.

Learning support offered

There are different categories assisted by the ASP. Typically they fall into the following sub-headings:
• Students studying in English for the first time
• Students who have negative experiences of schooling
• Students who are making no progress
• Students with specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia or ADHD
• Students with little or no previous schooling.

The ASP offers academic support focusing on English and maths. This, however, is not the full extent of support given. Many of the students above are severely lacking in confidence and have low self-esteem which often presents itself through disruptive behaviour. By establishing a supportive relationship with their ASP Teacher and LSA students are not only helped academically, but socially and emotionally as well. The result of this has been illustrated through the improved behaviour and community cohesion of our students. This enables the students to fully engage in their learning which in turn leads to even greater progress being achieved. For many students it is about bridging the gaps in their education. Without support in bridging these gaps the student falls further behind and feels trapped in a hopeless situation. The ASP helps students break the failure cycle and start on a path to success.

A child comes under special educational needs (SEN) if he or she has learning difficulties or disabilities that make it harder for him or her to learn and achieve.
Children who come under the special education needs are those who have
• Learning difficulties - in acquiring basic skills such as reading, writing, imitating, processing, and retaining information in an early years setting, primary or preparatory school.
• Social, emotional or behavioural difficulties - making friends, relating to adults and inappropriate behavior in an early years setting, primary or preparatory school.
• Sensory needs of a child- children who lack sensory integration.
• Communication difficulties - in expressing themselves or understanding what others are conversing.
• Medical or health conditions - which may slow down a child’s or progress and/or involves treatment that affects his or her education.

What is the Golden Curriculum?
The Golden Curriculum is an enriched programme that supports children with learning difficulties, speech delay and lack of social skills. It covers the basic fundamentals and concepts that support the mainstream academics. Our main aim is to prepare the child to be independent in areas of academics, play and social skills. The shadow teacher provides adequate support to the child to reach his maximum level of independence in his or her classroom. The occupational therapist works with the pupil’s sensory, motor and play skills.
